My first basketball game

***********

Last weekend I watched a basketball game for the first time. I am not a lover of this sport, I know nothing about playing techniques, jargon, fouls and such. But my two chaperons, lovers and players of this sport themselves, promised me that if I went with them they would explain me the whole thing. Eventually they convinced me.

I have to say they took it seriously and I did receive my lesson. Kudos. Not only I was taught about blocks, fouls, dribbles, about game dynamics and times, the importance of a quarter of a second, about the difference in one, two or three point shots. I was also explained the strategies (well, I was lectured; whether I have memorized it is a different story), what's behind calling tempos continuously, changing players often…..basically there is one thing I understood. In basketball, the main goal is buy time.

Despite my freshly acquired knowledge, I was always caught out of surprise when the guys would tear their hair out, shout, get angry at certain actions during the game…I simply didn't see a thing happen. Then, poor Derek had to recap the events and enlighten me about what I had just missed. Very sweet. One can tell he likes the sport, by his wide open eyes while he was explaining. We should have more people like him around, passionate in what they like.

What we went to watch wasn't a NBA league game, just to make it clear, but according to Makis and Derek there were a handful of good actions. I only saw overly tall thin men running back and forth, blocking and pushing each other in order to get to the basket…

Every time there was a short interval, girls in uniforms would show up and put up some entertainment for the public, and during the longer break an entire platoon of cheerleading little girls flooded the floor and jumped and kicked about and danced. And, oh, the music. So,  compared to other team games I know, say volleyball, basketball games happen with a constant music background. Loud music. Like, more of a drumming noise than Beethoven style if you know what I mean. So I have to ask my 先生 (teacher) whether all this music distracts players. He said that while playing, they don't even notice. Fair enough. I would never be able to focus, though.

At the end of the day I can say I had a good time watching the game. I don't know if they'll manage to drag me there again, but at least I wasn't bored.

Now, just one last, teeny, tiny, detail: those uniforms? Really? Who invented them? I mean, the top can pass, but those shorts? No wonder why I prefer volley….
