We Are One

Globalization and networking are very young phenomena. They became really popular only around the end of 1990's, then exploded.

Globalization means, basically, international integration. It is affected by and affects transactions, communication, dissemination of knowledge, mobility of people and goods, politics....

Networking started with emails, then went on with chats, Skype, and now social networks are taking it to the next level, to the point that millions of people -not necessarily all knowing all- can share images, thoughts, opinions, and more. 

On top of that, we are witnessing the merge of globalization and networking, or in another word: sharing. One single email account gives us access to not just emails, but also circles, groups, news, tweets, youtube, Facebook, running apps on our phones…and each of those web services can, in return, serve as portals to those and other web services, so that in one click -literally- we are all one. 

I have slowly come across all tools and apps (who doesn't own a smartphone nowadays...), not getting too much involved since by nature I am a little cautious. Even with my family, I always react when they start digging into my personal matters, I perceive it as inquisition. Or, I can also say that Sicilians all have their own idea of making information public and available...

But, eventually, little by little, I embrace the sharing (last in the line is twitter, signed up years ago, never used until now) because there are, after all, advantages, despite the downsides:

1-Keep in touch with people (especially when you live on the other side of the world). True, sometimes we wish we could stay away from those who want to connect with us but we don't feel the same way. We all know a few of those fitting the annoying profile...

2-Follow events worldwide and at the same time being followed, get visibility. This is very important for me, as I will be the one who will change the world and I better understand what's been done out there so far, before revealing my super powers. And, well, sometimes there is too much rubbish out there, fair enough. Like, people stupid enough to ridicule themselves in the name of fame and glory…we can't do anything about those but being compassionate.

3-Progress. This is important: sharing visions, ideas, results give us the possibility to benefit a better life and lifestyle. This is true for technology, for health (like, what are discovery, science and research without public sharing?), for the environment, for the economy, for the people. At the same time, too much offer, if not handled wisely, can be deleterious. An old belief wants it that the more we have the more dissatisfied we are. In other words, they say ignorance is key to happiness, in many cases...

4-Broaden our views, otherwise narrowed by the lack of information. Think of availability of travels, living abroad, people's blogs, the news, and such. Well, this is true only for those who have an inclination, an open mind on their own. Also, it must be noted that many areas of the world are kept in the dark, maybe because of oppressive regimes or because of poverty...

5-Easy access: what you need is an internet connection, et voila'! Sign in your email and you go LIVE everywhere. This is, unfortunately, a goldmine for those with bad intentions: your email gets hacked, you're f***ed...

Globalizzazione e contatti sociali (altrimenti detti networking) sono fenomeni giovanissimi, divenuti popolari solo verso la fine degli anni novanta, e dopo sono praticamente esplosi.

Globalizzazione significa, semplicemente, integrazione internazionale. E' influenzata da e influenza transazioni, comunicazioni, diffusione della conoscenza, mobilita' di cose e persone, politica…

I contatti sociali iniziavano con le email, poi le chat e skype, e ora i social network sono talmente diffusi che milioni di persone -che non necessariamente si conoscono tra loro- possono condividere immagini, idee, opinioni e molto altro.

In aggiunta, stiamo assistendo all'unione dei due fenomeni: unificazione, appunto, o condivisione. Un singolo profilo email ci da accesso non solo alle email, ma a circoli, gruppi, notizie, tweets, youtube, Facebook…e a loro volta tutti questi servizi possono combinarsi e far da portale uno all'altro, così che letteralmente in un solo clic siamo tutti una cosa.

Pian piano mi sono ritrovata questi tool e app (chi non ha un cellulare di ultima generazione, ormai…) davanti e all'inizio non mi lascio mai coinvolgere troppo visto che per natura sono abbastanza sospettosa. Anche in famiglia, reagisco sempre quando incominciano a fare domande personali perché le considero inquisitorie. Oppure posso dire che come tutti i siciliani, ho le mie idee in fatto di pubblica informazione…

In ogni caso, alla fine e a poco a poco mi faccio influenzare dalla condivisione (ultimo in lista e' twitter, iscritta anni fa e mai usato) perché in fondo ci sono dei vantaggi, a dispetto dei lati negativi:

1- stare in contatto con le persone (specialmente utile quando si vive dall'altra parte del mondo). Verissimo, anche se a volte vogliamo stare lontano da quelli che si mettono in contatto con noi che non ne vogliamo proprio sapere. Abbiamo tutti qualcuno che rientra nel profilo della persona fastidiosa…

2- seguire gli eventi nel mondo e allo stesso tempo essere seguiti, ottenere maggiore visibilità. Questo punto e' importantissimo per me visto che cambierò il mondo e quindi faccio meglio a tenermi informata su ciò che e' già stato fatto prima di rivelare i miei super poteri. E' anche vero che spesso si trova un sacco di spazzatura, come gente stupida che si ridicolizza in nome di fama e gloria…beh, non possiamo far nulla per loro se non compatire.

3-progresso. Questo e' davvero importante: condividere visioni, idee, risultati ci da la possibilità di beneficiare di una vita migliore. E' vero per la tecnologia, la salute (ad esempio, cosa sarebbero scienza e ricerca senza condivisone globale?), l'ambiente, l'economia, le persone. Allo stesso tempo, la troppa offerta può essere disastrosa se non viene gestita consapevolmente. Una vecchia credenza dice che più abbiamo e più siamo insoddisfatti. In altre parole, dicono che l'ignoranza e' la chiave per la felicita, in molti casi…

4-allargare gli orizzonti che sarebbero ristretti in assenza di informazioni. Pensiamo alla possibilita di viaggiare, vivere all'estero, la presenza di blog, notizie, eccetera. Certo, questo vale per quelli che hanno una certa propensione alla scoperta e hanno una mentalità aperta. E poi c'e' anche da dire che molte aree nel mondo sono tenute all'oscuro o per via di regimi oppressivi o per povertà…

5-Accesso facile: tutto quello che ci serve e' una connessione internet ed e' fatto. Accedi alle tue email e sei dappertutto. Sfortunatamente questo rappresenta una miniera d'oro per i malintenzionati: se il profilo email viene violato, sei rovinato...
