Summertime : May it be. May be not.

Every year I look forward to May. May definitely is the month for re-birth: roses bloom, days are sunny and warm, all cafes and bars start having tables and chairs outside, Tokyo's hipster and posh neighborhoods all pimp up their open terrace spaces, people invade parks and bay areas, they wake up from winter lethargy and start feeling the energy flowing back in them.

Now it is that time of the year again. It's that time when you wake up in the morning and it's not dark outside, when you don't need a comforter to keep you warm at night, when you can go running after work because it is still bright, when you can have breakfast on a terrace, when all the open air festivals start, when you can sit outside at a restaurant and actually feel good….it's summer! Last Sunday I even had my first suntan, I could finally lay horizontal on my folding chair on the balcony, sunglasses, SPF lotion, cool drink.

I will never stop repeating myself about how pretty Yokohama bay area becomes this time around. Sea, sky, grass, trees, modern architecture, glass windows, walkways, malls they all find their reason for being there, like well dosed components of a chemical reaction that releases pure energy in the air. I brunched together with some friends at their place, we sat outside on the balcony and had Greek and Spanish food, drank chilled rose wine, chatted about this and that. It was a beautiful afternoon. We stayed outside until the last ray of light was falling on us.

Normally, well... true for those who live between 40 and 42 parallel north, there is enough time for us to adapt and enjoy the good season, so that from the call of spring to the chill of winter we have room to play. Normally. However in Japan, without time saving rules, with the exposure to Siberian winds and tropical storms, facing the ocean….it is totally different than, say, Sicily. At the end of February it starts getting springy in Sicily, so that by the end of April it is already full summer for us. And summer lasts at least until October. Well, it used to be that way, although nowadays this whole climate change business interferes with our well rooted habits so that we ought to wait two months more than usual before sitting outside and have our pistachio ice cream in the sun…

Japan is said to still have 4 seasons in a year, but truly most of the time weather sucks here. I'd say there are 6 seasons here: snow cold winter, spring, rain downpour, sticky hot, typhoon, fall.  Yes, no summer in this succession of events, it wasn't a slip. OK, there is a season that could be considered summer, if your idea of summer is Amazon forest humid and Death Valley hot… We aren't yet done teeth-chattering for the early spring cold that few weeks later we are already suffering for the humid and hot days. The time when one can benefit of perfectly dry, pleasantly warm, bright sunny and colorful days (namely spring and into summer) is very very short. I just said that I could open my folding chair and lay out on a balcony on a Sunday. Right, two days after that rain came and weather has been unstable since then. We've had winds, cold, heavy rainfalls, beautiful skies at sunset (one of the advantages of a after-storm), and then rain again.

Monsoon season is approaching (if not already here) and my chair on the balcony will get rust all over.

Please, some more dry and warm days before the ugly season comes! Please!

***************
