Weather is not what it used to be

I have forgotten how summer vacations look like, how they feel like.

I can't say with certainty if this happens because of the job, or because of the place I live in, or even both. What is unanimously, universally ascertained, though, is that the weather is to be blamed all the time.

If I imagine my grandparents complaining, they'd say "the weather is not what it used to be". I mean, the sentence "[subject] is not what it used to be" applies to anything. Well, it works.

I know I may sound redundant, but certain things were absolute truths when I was younger, like that summer back home in Sicily lasted form April to October. Eight months of dry, warm, sunny days. There was no need to plan ahead, no need to check the forecast, no bad luck: it was sunny and it stayed that way. You knew.

Now even in Sicily it is impossible to know what the days will look like. This is the new absolute truth. And it applies to every place, every time except for weekends… for those we have to always take into account the infamous Murphy's law, so that weekends are poised for bad weather.

This summer in Tokyo has been rather cool compared to the weather projections for this period, we've had lots of rain, lots of winds, out-of-season typhoons. Summer is becoming an issue, especially for me, known to friends worldwide for being a seaside girl. Given that 1) Tokyo has no (good) beaches, 2) summer holidays have to be wisely used, 3) Japanese tourism is organized such that all vacationers must travel to the same locations in a limited time window (outside of which services are no longer available, aka you are on your own), AND finally 4) the weather doesn't cooperate…..well, we are experiencing a crisis.

Now, I am complaining and all because, well, I have nothing else more interesting to talk about right now, but really it is because for the n-th year in a row I haven't had a proper summer vacation and I need one. I mean, even last year when I went to Sicily in August, people I said AUGUST, I could manage only two days at the beach. The rest of the vacation was cold and cloudy. Just saying…
Secondly, I have planned a three day weekend at the seaside. Weather has been gorgeous, guess when? Right, weekdays. Weekend forecasts: cloudy with chance of rain. Great, just great….

*************
