Exotic discovery

You know you haven't been out and about for long when you go to a very popular park in central Tokyo e you don't know there's a huge greenhouse there.

Today I finally could meet a friend who became a mother just a month ago, and we decided to check Shinjuku Gyoen, the most visited, biggest garden in Tokyo, and I was surprised (we both were) to see a huge modern glass building which turned out to be a nice green house, complete with a pond with lotuses, a waterfall, coffee plants, cactuses and giant orchids...

Beautiful place to be, even for a very short period of time, and to feel somewhere exotic, the collection of plants is remarkable, given the small size of the green house.

It reminds me of the existence of a big tropical garden place near the bay (Yumenoshima park), which I haven't yet ticked off my list but that I am sure deserves a trip sooner or later. I do need to find hidden spots, secret gardens in this overpopulated city, or else I will forget what nature looks and feels like.

Shinjuku Gyoen garden is such a place, it can still be crowded at times, but overall is far enough from the station and from the city noise to maintain its charm and beauty.

The peace and quiet of the garden, coupled with an amazing day, were the perfect settings for a stroll of two women and a baby. Hadn't we done so, we wouldn't have a story to tell about banana trees and cactuses.
