Rooftop BBQ

Summertime is BBQ time! Sadly, not everywhere in town is grilling meat allowed. I mean, outside. The restriction makes all the sense in the world, because no one likes to get all the smoke from the neighbor who's happily barbecuing just one apartment below or next to yours…a jungle of concrete and lack of room don't marry very well with outdoor fires. But because a jungle of concrete exists, then rooftops spaces for rent exist, too, and licensed to BBQ!

There is one of those places on the roof of the station building near where I live (built just a few year ago), which I hadn't had a chance to see until recently. It's very well organized and super convenient: you buy your meat and whatever other things you'd like to incinerate at the supermarket downstairs, stock up on booze, take a lift up to the roof and start grilling. The space is complete with tables and barbecues, knives and chopping boards, washing sinks, bowls and charcoals already crackling and demanding meat. Depending on how high those places are, they might even come with a night view over the city…ours was embellished with a small zen garden along one edge of the roof, wood walkways, and was high enough to give a decent view of the city.

However, in Japan summertime means also monsoon season, which makes it very difficult to plan outdoor activities in advance, and sometimes even checking the latest most accurate weather forecast may not be enough. So when I planned a rooftop barbecue with other students and colleagues from work, guess what the weather was like…

There we were, until the day before unsure of whether we want to go on with the plan or retreat (to my place), crossing fingers and preparing teru teru bouzu (those are little paper dolls believed to have some powers over the weather that are hung to prevent a rainy day). In the end we went ahead with the BBQ plan, and of course rain came down in buckets as soon as we left the office. Good that the BBQ terrace also provided shelter, so that we were dry and warm. Later it also stopped raining completely, to our relief, and we had a nice and animated evening.

The group was an interesting mix of old and just arrived young students (I mean, youuuuung), so the event was a perfect chance for them to meet other people in the group. For a few of us the evening continued by the river.

For even fewer of us, it didn't end at all, or so the story goes…

Estate e' tempo di grigliate! Purtroppo, in città non e' permesso arrostire all'aperto.
