Lifestyle - Bento

It’s been a while since our last appointment with the saga “Lifestyle”…

I thought I had covered all aspects of the Japanese lifestyle, even more than that, when something I did recently made me realise I left one episode out. It was when I collaborated with Yahoo Japan to prepare a lunch box, that it occurred to me: this time I introduce you to the concept of 弁当 (bento), or lunch box.

Somehow, in every culture we see a common theme to bringing one’s own lunch. In the old times it was maybe a cloth wrapped around some bread and cheese, nowadays is the sandwich or some junk food chains paper bag with chips and burgers.

But lunch boxes in Japan have evolved to a different level, they are not just mere food containers, they are not just tupperware…they are stylish pieces of art. They come in ceramic, wood, all-in-one containers with compartments or stacked containers, even the plastic ones are nicely shaped and decorated, with fancy bands to seal them and accompanying set of chopsticks to go with, they are themed with movie or cartoon character, they are for kids and adults…they look so pretty that I want to buy and collect them all, even if I don’t really use them.

I believe lunch boxes in Japan must have existed longer than in any other place. Or, at least, their use was dropped elsewhere (and then only recently picked up again) but in Japan, where it continued and flourished. Maybe even went beyond the original purpose: the bento tradition, once restricted to mothers or wives preparing food-to-go packaging for children or husbands, went broader and hit the market. In grocery stores and supermarkets, plastic containers of all sizes and shapes are up for grabs on the shelves. There even are whole shops (and shop chains) dedicated to bento, where you enter, take the food you like from the trays or order it at the counter, put all in a plastic container and here you are, your lunch box is ready.

Be it for your lunch, your picnic, your dinner, your quick fix, your save-it-for-later, be it prepared one day ahead or freshly packaged, whatever is your choice, make it a bento choice.
