The coldest week

Eventually, first time this winter season, the city saw its first snowfall. On a working day. Whether later or earlier than usual, it is hard to say, but surely we hadn’t seen that much snow since 2014. What started as a light snowfall soon became a blizzard. The north part of Tokyo was covered in something like 40cm of snow, whereas the south area, including Yokohama, was “spared” and we got about 15cm.

At the beginning the scene was pretty, soft little white flurries dancing in the air; later the strong wind was blowing snow all over the place, but everything turned white much faster. At night, all that snow was shining back so much that it looked like it wasn’t night-like dark…it looked like an average arctic midnight sun kind of day.

Now, snow in Tokyo is not uncommon. Actually, pretty much every year, it snows at least once in the city. It is not something that worries people much, nor it causes traffic or transports disruption. I mean, it piles up to maybe 2cm and then melts a few hours after. But in general, cities here on the east coast of Japan, at Tokyo’s latitudes, are never prepared for sudden, extreme weather like this time. I remember it was tough already in 2014, when the show collected on the side of the roads for a week. 

This time again, people were encouraged to leave work early and try catch their ride home, before the weather conditions aggravated, as the forecast -obviously- was of traffic jams, accidents, train delays and so forth. Still, even with all that warning there were countless reports of people injured due to slippery roads, traffic jams, car accidents, public transport disruptions, including flights cancellation, all well into the day after the snow storm.

Lots of people shared photos and videos of the event, because like it or not snow is magic. But this time social media didn’t go bonkers immediately after the sighting the very first snow flake of the very first snow day of the year…you know, that hashtag jubilation: snow, snow snow, let is snow, snow day, first snow, white snow, and so on. The frenzy peaked later in the evening, when people trying to go back home were reporting on the situation. 

Since that day, though, temperatures have maintained a record low, and we’re still rattling our teeth one week after.

La città finalmente ha avuto la sua prima nevicata della stagione invernale, e in un giorno lavorativo. Se la neve sia arrivata prima o dopo del solito, non si capisce, ma di sicuro non ne vedevamo cosi tanta dal 2014. Ciò che e’ iniziato come una nevicata leggera si e’ trasformato subito in una bufera. La parte nord di Tokyo e’ stata coperta da circa 40cm di neve, mentre le zone più a sud, tra cui Yokohama, sono state “risparmiate” e ci si e’ fermati a 15cm.

All’inizio la scena era proprio bella, con soffici batuffoli bianchi che danzavano nell’aria; ma poi i venti forti hanno preso il sopravvento e in un attimo era neve dappertutto. La sera la luminosità riflessa dal manto nevoso dava l’impressione di trovarsi nell’artico col sole di mezzanotte.

Ora, non e’ che le nevicate a Tokyo siano rare…anzi. Diciamo che ogni anno nevica almeno una volta, ma non desta preoccupazioni e non fa impazzire il traffico. Di solito non si superano i 2cm di neve, e poche ore dopo comunque e’ gia sciolta. Ma in generale le città sulla costa est del Giappone, alle latitudini nostre, non sono ovviamente preparate per questi episodi improvvisi ed estremi. Mi ricordo che del 2014, era caotico e la neve e’ rimasta depositata lungo le strade per circa una settimana.

Anche stavolta come allora, la gente e’ stata sollecitata ad andare via prima dall’ufficio, prima che le condizioni si aggravassero nel senso di incidenti, rallentamenti dei trasporti, code in strada, eccetera. Anche con tutte sta raccomandazioni, ci sono stati tantissimi casi di cadute sul manto ghiacciato, il traffico era in tilt, molti voli sono stati cancellati e via di seguito, fino anche al giorno dopo la nevicata.

Tutti hanno condiviso foto e video dell’evento, perché che ci piaccia o no, la neve e’ magica. Stavolta pero’, le piattaforme sociali non sono scoppiate immediatamente dopo l’avvistamento del primo fiocco di neve del primo giorno di neve…sapete che intendo, quel tripudio di hashtag neve neve neve, let it snow, snow day, prima neve, white snow eccetera eccetera. La mania si e’ poi affermata la sera, quando la gente usciva dagli uffici e registrava lo stato delle cose.

Da quel giorno pero’ le temperature si sono mantenute al di sotto dei minimi storici e ancora adesso, una settimana dopo, stiamo battendo i denti dal freddo.
